and there goes the neighborhood

This morning, we realized our van had been robbed. Missing? Two jars of loose change I use at garage sales and, unfortunately, Michael's wallet. Michael never leaves his wallet in the van. And of course, the one day he does, *poof* it disappears.

Thankfully, the thief only got $40 plus the change.

The officer that came over to file the police report said it was the first of such incidents in our neighborhood. He also said it was probably just some kids looking for cash. I pray he was right, and we won't ever have identity theft issues. However it goes, it means canceling our credit cards and our debit card and replacing all the pertinent and valuable information stored in a wallet. Not to mention the actual wallet.

So...Thief, I have two questions...

Why us? We have the junkiest house on the block, no questions asked. The yuckiest yard, almost the oldest vehicles on the block. I've always been so secure with the thought of thieves avoiding us due to our obvious lack of steal-able stuff.

And, why couldn't you have just taken the cash and left the wallet? Hmm???

That happens at my house all to often. They probably checked every door on every car in the block and yours (among others) was unlocked.

Last time they tok all the change and left the pennies?!?!?!

Amanda-I'd leave the pennies, too. It probably weights them down when they are running from the LAW.

sorry to hear that! i always felt safe in your neighborhood--since it used to be my neighborhood, too!

on another note--did you have fun at the bay city fireworks?

What a bummer! I hate the feeling of being violated like that. Matt's car was stolen when we were first married and his golf clubs were in the trunk (a graduation gift from his folks). Ugh.

Oh Jenny, That's TERRIBLE! If you are wondering 'why us, why our old van', here is a story of another vehicle theft. Our son has a friend who had his vehicle stolen from his place of work..twice!! The vehicle was eventually recovered in another location both times, but 'totaled' the second time. It had been used by drug dealers. The police said that it was typical for drug transporters to steal the junkiest vehicle that they can find. They are easier to start, less noticable than a fancy new car, and often not even reported missing by the owner if the value is less than the insurance deductable. His guy had just come back from a fast food lunch and the police thought that the thieves had seen the car (which they wanted), followed him to his work place and took the car as soon as he went inside. CREEPY, HUH?
I hope that someone just 'borrowed' your van for soome fun or something and that it is found in drivable condition.
I am praying for 'peace of mind' for you guys.
Take care, Aunt Rosemary

Did you accidently leave the car unlocked or did they break in? I'm curious because we no longer have a garage now that we live in an apartment. I just assume we are safe if the car is locked, but maybe not.

Questions for the thieves who broke into our truck a couple of years ago -- "What did you end up doing with the Bible on CD and all of the Northern Lights CDs?" "Why did you take tire chains?" "How does Daniel's suit fit you?" "How is the resale market in Albuquerque these days?" and "if you had to steal my camera, could you have at least rewinded the roll of film that was in it and left that?" I'm sorry the same thing happened to you guys - we know EXACTLY how you feel - especially if you happened to have a $2000 piece of equipment belonging to your church in the van at the time =(. Thieves are bad but God is good!!!!

I'm so sorry. I've been told don't leave anything in view in your car and keep it lock. Always keep your purse with you.It doesn't matter what your car looks like. Everyone is a target. I keep a copy of all the cards in my purse in a file. Eric and I bought Identity theft insurance. Because we learned it's when it happens it will save you 600 hours to recover and make your ID safe and secure again.
I pray God will help you threw this and that Micheal's information wasn't comprimise.

The car was unlocked, and this is a lesson to us on checking and double checking to make sure it's locked at all times. The crazy part is that this neighborhood and really all of Midland is usually quite safe. Oh, well...

Well, I just re-read this blog, and realized that your van was ROBBED, not STOLEN!!! WHEW! I guess I was out in the sun too long... My comment didn't make a lot of sense...sorry. A stolen wallet, and some change is must easier to deal with than a stolen van!!! I am glad that you are able to praise God in adversity.
