listening

So this morning, Aaron tried to grab this long broken mop handle thingy to play with and had a meltdown when I would not let him. After he yelled at me in his sassy toddler way, and got in trouble, we sat on the rocking chair in his room and I asked him what was going on. He told me through tears that he wanted to "hold the violin" and I realized he wanted to pretend that the handle was a violin.

"Would you like me to make a violin out of cardboard?" I asked. You would have thought I offered him the moon, and that this hastily drawn and sloppily cut violin was the real thing. He "played" it all morning and it was the first thing he asked for after his nap. Ah, simple pleasures. He's been enthralled with the violin since the day he first saw it being played in person. (I think that would have been the Pettit team)

He's a natural! It's in his genes. He has ancestors (on the Willsie & Tobey side) that built and played violins. It's not too early to start lessons, if that is his heart's desire.

Both my girls played the violin when they were little. But I have to say they weren't as passionate as your son. Lissa switched to the Viola then the piano. Carmen played violin from 5th grade threw college she actually still has her violin. They learned by doing the Susuki method. I had all the tapes and music till this summer. Carmen passed on her stuff to a friend who is a music teacher in Portland.

Oh, he is so cute! What a wise mom to stop & figure out what caused his meltdown. Too often we don't take the time to find out what is really bothering our children. (guilty!!) But when we do, there's usually a hidden blessing. I'm sure it blessed your momma's heart that you could easily give him what he wanted. Now...if he could just learn to politely ask instead of having a meltdown! Patience, my dear, that will come! :)

How nice that you were able to really tune in to the "root" of the issue.

I need to do this for Madda!!! did you just freehand it on a box?? We are starting Madeline in violin lessons this fall (suzuki) and this would be great for her!

Erin, yes, I did just freehand it. I rummaged through our recycling for something suitable. I looked for our utility knife, but I only found scissors. He plays with it so much I really should clean up the edges, but I don't think I will. He doesn't care, and I'm a slacker. HA.
