advice needed

Great title, huh? I was over at the midwife's house yesterday and she took a look at my food journal and immediately told me I need to eat more protein. I guess I'm only getting about half of what she recommends. I'm honestly having a hard time getting food into my body (the whole running out of room dilemma) and since I haven't gained much weight she is slightly concerned that I bump it up on the nutrition in order to help my stamina during the birth process. Good nutrition also guards against things like hemorrhage and anemia - both of which are things I want to avoid!

So, anyone know of a good tasting (and good for you) protein powder that I could add to a fruit smoothie or make a shake with?

Protein makes me think of beans, which in turn makes me think of Q Doba. I can polish off a whole burrito in no time flat. Maybe we should do lunch? :)

I have no advice on the protein powder, I'm sorry.

Qdoba is yummy, and I definitely wouldn't mind doing lunch, but there is no way I can fit even a half of a burrito in at one time! This baby is seriously squishing my stomach! ;-) Michael laughs at me b/c I am SO HUNGRY and then take 10 bites and start huffing and puffing to get more in. LOL.

Jenny, here's a link about Jay Robb protein powders - supposed to be both healthy and yummy. Joel has some and seems to really like it, but I've never personally tasted it.

Also, here's the official Jay Robb site.

Hope you find something that works for you. I know what you mean by wanting to avoid hemorrage, etc. I had some trouble with that with Titus and will be looking to prevent it with the next one too.

I haven't ever tried protein powders so can't recommend from personal experience, but there are a few threads that might be helpful at www.welltellme.com. I just searched for "protein powder" and came up with quite a bit of info. Hope you find something that will work well! :)

When I had my tonsillectomy last summer & could only drink for about a week, Joe bought some kind of protein powder from Walmart. I think it was cookies & cream or something like that. I thought it was pretty good.

Nate is a distributor for Herbalife products, and they have a protein powder that he swears by. When he was doing 2 meal replacement shakes/day, he always added their protein powder and was never hungry throughout the day. MY Nate, eater extraordinaire! I hope you can find something that really benefits you!
Here's Nate's site, in case you're curious:

Never even heard of protein powder so I can't help you! Why not eat some cheese and salami? And nuts are always yummy snacks.

Al, I'm eating like crazy and just can't fit enough food into my body. That's why I'm looking. :-)

There is a protein powder called Beneprotein (like Benefiber) that you can add to most foods and it's tasteless. It adds a bunch of protein to your protein-lacking meals. Having had weight loss surgery 3 years ago, this was highly recommended since we couldn't eat as much after having the surgery (kind of like your problem with running out of room)! They supposedly carry it at Walgreens or other pharmacies (over the counter) and it's not horribly expensive either. If you can't find it, let me know and I can track some down for you!

Hi Jenny,
Our family has taken Shaklee Protein, it has several flavors, for about 29 yrs. It is from soy. It is some of the best you can buy. Protein is important for every part of us, hair, nails skin, etc. It has the complete amino acids in it.
Hope all goes well for you and the baby.

Well, Mom beat me to it, but I was going to direct you towards Shaklee as well. Of course you could go to Starbucks and get one of their new Vivvano smoothies that has whey protein in it. I had a banana chocolate one today. Mine had espresso added to it, but you don't have to do that. It was yummy! They have another flavor too. I also remember Coldstone adding some new protein shakes. I wish I could just take you out to one of those places and have "girl talk/sharing" time again.

I'm jealous Andrea has already tried the Starbucks smoothies! I just noticed them yesterday! However, I wouldn't look there for the protein.
In way of foods. Couscous and Quinoa both are a good source of protein. You can do so many things with them to make your mail taste different every time!

Carnation Instant Breakfast has a good amount of protein when made with whole milk and it's easy to find and probably won't break the bank! You also mentioned anemia and I cannot recommend FLORADIX highly enough. You'd proably have to go to a health food store for it and it is pricey-and I'm not going to lie to you, it tastes nasty, but it is the best way to get your hemoglobin levels up in a short amount of time. This is crucial for any birth, and especially a homebirth. Good luck to you.

Thanks for entering my giveaway! Congrats on your soon-to-be arrival. Our second son was born 2 weeks ago.
About protein powder, whey is supposed to be the best from what I've heard. You can add it to anything, even a cup of milk (but I'd go with smoothies too). Are you having a homebirth? Midwives are awesome. Our (new) son was born at home.

Sorry, no advice on protein powder. But your note made me laugh. I remember in my last trimester being constantly hungry but with no room to put ANY food anywhere!! :) Within minutes of Caleb being born I was BEGGING for food and I think I ate three full meals within a matter of two-to-three hours. But on a more serious note, I will be praying for you more diligently for you and the baby! Thanks for keeping us all updated on everything. I am faithful about two things on facebook - - checking NBBC Mothers and reading Jenny Muth Moments!! :)
