No sew? No problem!

After reading Alicia's post about her very fabulous curtains and reading the comments that followed, I am inspired to let all you sewing challenged out there know of a wonderful product called Heat N Bond. You can do about anything with this stuff. I once made a bridesmaid's dress top almost exclusively with this great stuff, and I've hemmed pants a couple times. It holds. And, it is available at Walmart, so rejoice! There are varying strengths for different types of cloth, but don't let that scare you!

Here's a picture of the package, along with instructions on how you can make your own curtains sans sewing machine. (you will want to buy 1/2 Heat n Bond) Happy Faking!

Thanks for the tip. I have to admit that I usually take advantage of my mom even for hemming, but maybe I can give her a break now! =)

Yes! I made the old big blue Amy Carmichael Society flag out of that stuff :) Sewing machine wasn't on my "take to college list" :) Thanks for the reminder! It really is great stuff!

Thanks for the tip. Whenever I see that stuff, I think, "Yeah right. As if that stuff works." :) I'll have to try it out.
Do you think it's worth it to know how to sew? I'm asking sincerely. Only because I can find such good deals through garage sales or thrift stores or clearance racks, so I was wondering if the time & effort are worth knowing. Just wondering. :)

Pam, an excellent question! I find that it is DEFINITELY worth it for house decorating, it is DEFINITELY worth it for alterations of those thrift store/garage sale "good deals" (who hasn't bought a pair of pants that fit great but had 3" extra length?) and it is worth it for those times when you know exactly what you want and can't find it anywhere!! It's also worth it when you have to make something to wear in a friend's wedding! I'll tell you honestly, I don't really LOVE sewing, and I've done it for at least 10 years. Bridal gown alterations, Northland Costume dept, etc. I do think it is worth it, and a good skill to have, but I don't love it with all my heart like some people do. :-)

Jenny, you wrote: "who hasn't bought a pair of pants that fit great but had 3" extra length?"

That comment made me giggle. I have to be honest here... I'm not an especially tall person (5'6" is average, I think, or maybe slightly above average?) but I have to say, that I've never bought a pair of pants that were 3" too long. :) I did, however, wear 3" heels to my wedding so we wouldn't have to alter the length of the gown.

My mom taught me some of the basics of sewing when I was in high school, but I never practiced. I've been wanting to make a valance for my LR--I have the fabric all picked out, but I didn't want to waste my money on fabric that I would probably botch up. (I also don't have a sewing machine) But this little tip just might make me brave enough to go and purchase my fabric! So, Thanks!

"Ah, but Ruth," said Jenny in friendly jest, "The question is, not whether you bought the pants, but rather WOULD you have bought the pants that were too long if you had thought you could hem them?" and she hoped fervently that Ruth would giggle more.

Hey, awesome! I hope to see pics of those living room windows soon - with your new decorations!!!

Thanks for the tip. I have a machine but the tension is so annoying that I end up just hand sewing my hems or safty pinning them. ha. Pathetic I know. I should just get my tension fixed, get a new machine, or just buy stock in HeatN'Bond. Thanks!
