an enlightening read

This book is one I have recently read, and I would recommend it to all parents. It's a very good resource for descriptions of childhood diseases and details of the recommended/required shots. I found it to be fair and reasonable, a resource that allows parents to get facts clearly laid out in an easy to understand format. It is Excellent. (notice the capital "E") At B & N for around $6.

Thanks for sharing this, Jenny--I've heard this recommended before, though I've not yet read it. One that I have read, and also highly recommend, is "Vaccinations: A Thoughtful Parent's Guide" by Aviva Jill Romm. It's easy to read and informative. Although we've personally chosen not to vax at this point, I know that decision is not necessarily right for everyone, and each parent needs to seek God's wisdom on what is best for their child. I just think it's also very important to be informed on the subject, as there is a lot to it--much more than I'd ever realized until a friend recommended I study up on it!

I agree - too often we make decisions without studying out the WHOLE issue! I'm so glad God gives wisdom on things like this!

Renee read it and felt the same way we are taking some action based on this.

So have you decided not to have Aaron vaccinated?

As you may know, we've decided not to vaccinate Jonas. I tell anyone, when the opportunity arises, to just inform yourself. Its your job as a parent to be educated and not trust everything a man wearing a stethoscope tells you. Unfortunately, we have several close to home stories of tragic outcomes of vaccines. I like your boldness in posting such a topic! :-)
Also, something I just found out...our schools in SC make you have all or nothing shots when entering kindergarten. Another words, you may feel two vaccines may be important and the others garbage, so you selectively vaccinate. Well, you don't even have that right as a parent anymore. If you've only done two, they make you go back and to the rest in order to enter school. Check out your schools policies!

Sarah, MI is a great state. You can opt out of vaccinations due to religious, philosophical, or medical reasons. You just have to fill out a form. Yay for MI!

Kelly, We've decided to selectively vaccinate and delay the "recommended schedule" Basically, we're isolating the shots in case there is a reaction. That way we know which one is the culprit! :-) But before I read the book, I was totally against vaccinations. I recommend the book for parents staunchly on either side of the issue. It's a great resource.

S.C. also allows you to sign waivers but they are no good once you start selectively vaccinating. You can say I'm signing the religious waivier but the schools still tell you, that its only good if you are not vaccinating 100%. We just found it out and were surprised!

What a huge, daunting bag of worms! Kudos to you for doing your homework, Jenny. I want to get that book--there's so much junk out there. We've made a non-traditional decision about Olivia's vacc's, too. We have to do our part and trust God with the outcome!

I really think our generation is one who questions and needs real answers to our questions...whenever we get to the point where blind trust without careful consideration is our accepted mode of operation, we're just asking for trouble. I hope our kids, our lives and even our faith are the healthier for it!
