nobody tells you the real stuff anymore

I love being 33.  Love it.  There are really cool things about being older than I used to be, like seeing my friends with kids that look exactly like younger versions of themselves, and being able to say things like, "twenty years ago..."  There are lots of great things in my life that I have to be 33 to really appreciate.  However. When I was young, nobody said real things to me about my future as an older human.

1. Nobody told me that eyebrows all of a sudden go crazy.  Seriously crazy.  Well, they do.

2. Nobody told me about hair that looks like eyebrows growing from other places, places from which it probably should be removed, like chins (for example).

3. Nobody told me that pillow lines stop disappearing within the first 15 minutes of waking up.  I need at least half an hour, now, and I expect that number to continue to increase.

4. Nobody told me about the times that all of a sudden you start crying like a baby with absolutely no control.  It could be because you have a moment of clarity, or you see something sweet like an older couple walking and holding hands, or even super cheesy like a Hallmark commercial, or even something random like a leaf blowing down the sidewalk.  I think this is because of older-ness, but I could be wrong.

5. Nobody told me about sleep, and how precious it really is.  Nobody told me to relish the years when I could freely choose when and how and how long I could sleep.  They should have.

I know there are more, but...

6. Nobody told me about memory fritzes and just plain forgetfulness.  Seriously.  I need to get with the program!

You know you have things to add to this list...

Right on, sister!

I'd add:

7. Nobody told me that I'd STILL be getting pimples in my 30's.

8. Nobody told me how much more difficult it is to lose weight when you get to your mid-thirties.

9. Nobody told me how very awesome it is to just sit back and to watch my children become who God is making them and to ENJOY them. Just have fun without an educational agenda for every.stinking.moment.

10. Nobody told me how much love this old heart of mine would be able to hold! Life.is.good.

:)

Those are definitely some of my discoveries as well, but I will have to time the pillow lines...I still assume they are gone in less that 15 minutes!

One of mine would be that even in my 30's I didn't think I would still feel like I grow "pigtails" and wonder if my mother felt the same way as I do at the age she was when I was five!

Maybe it was a good thing, then that we didn't know then what we know now!

Oh, how I feel you on #5. I honestly think that this is the direct cause of all the "wisdom" that has accumulated around my eyes. I'm so very thankful for coffee and grace!

Number 6 is my life. The silver lining to that is that now the people around me have another source of amusement! ;)

Oh my dear GREAT niece ... wonderful observations. 33 is indeed a wonderful age, especially when you are blessed with having the most important job on earth. (LOVE the picture of your 3 precious red heads on fb. :) ) Maybe the memory issue is related to having busy little ones to care for (at all hours of the day and night) and the increased emotion to realizing just how precious life is. I was lucky to have an older mom (my friends thought she was my grandma) and older sisters the same age as my friends' moms. So I saw them gracefully going through various stages of aging and I was prepared. I attribute my wrinkles to all the laughing with my kids and grands - so many happy memories staring at me in the mirror. I just turned 63 - an age that my 80+ year old mom used to call 'young'. :D I guess it is all relative. For sure, each day is a gift - that's why they call it the present.

Ah Jenny! Some things are better learned as you get older, not being pre-warned about everything. I loved the "kid-raising" years of my life. It was also different going through that again, twelve years later with our youngest. Isn't God gracious to not have us be so informed about all that? Praise the Lord for the strength He gives us to make it through all these things. (and being forgetful about some things can be a real blessing in disguise)
Love, Mom Muth
